Is Kindle Unlimited Worth It?
A subscription that lets you read from a large pool of titles. Whether it pays off depends entirely on what — and how much — you read.
What it actually is
Kindle Unlimited is a monthly subscription giving access to a rotating catalogue of ebooks (and some audiobooks) that publishers and authors have enrolled in the programme. It is not 'every Kindle book' — many big-name titles and new releases from major publishers are not included. You borrow a number of titles at a time and swap them out as you finish.
Think of it as an all-you-can-read buffet of a specific, large menu rather than the entire bookstore.
Who it suits
It pays off fastest for heavy readers, for fans of genres where independent authors are strong (romance, science fiction, fantasy, cosy mystery, self-publishing-friendly non-fiction), and for anyone who reads broadly and doesn't mind what's on the menu.
It's poor value if you only read a couple of books a month, or if you specifically want big-publisher bestsellers, which are often excluded.
How to test it cheaply
Before subscribing, search the catalogue for a dozen books you actually want to read and see how many are included. If most are, it'll likely pay for itself. New subscribers can often start with a free trial — use it to read a stack quickly and decide.
