About this book
Twin sisters Desiree and Stella Vignes run away from their small Southern Black community at sixteen — and their lives split: one returns home with her dark-skinned daughter, the other passes as white in a life her family knows nothing about. Bennett's novel spans generations to ask what race is, what it costs to perform an identity, and what is owed to the people you leave behind.
Published in 2020, The Vanishing Half spent over a year on the New York Times bestseller list and was named one of the best books of the year by dozens of outlets. Bennett drew on her mother's stories of growing up in a Louisiana town like Mallard.
Discussion questions
- Stella passes as white for decades, hiding her past even from her husband and daughter. How does Bennett show what this performance costs her — and does the novel ask us to judge her?
- Mallard is a town founded on the idea of lightness — Black residents who prize light skin. What is Bennett saying through this setting about colourism as a system within a system?
- The twins' daughters — Jude and Kennedy — meet without knowing their connection. How does Bennett use the second generation to explore what is inherited and what can be escaped?
- Reese's storyline introduces a different kind of identity transformation. How does Bennett place his transition alongside Stella's passing — what do the parallels illuminate and where do they break down?
- The Vanishing Half became one of the most discussed novels of 2020. What conversations does it open that earlier passing narratives — like Nella Larsen's Passing — could not?
