Banks's debut novel keeps its secrets until a final revelation that reframes everything that has preceded it.

Published in 1984, The Wasp Factory divided critics — some called it sick; others called it a masterpiece. Banks went on to become one of Scotland's most important novelists, writing both mainstream literary fiction and science fiction (as Iain M. Banks).
