About this book

Maya Angelou's memoir of her childhood and adolescence in the American South and in California — the racism, the trauma and the gradual emergence of her voice through literature. One of the most widely assigned and most challenged memoirs in American education, it announces one of the great literary voices of the 20th century.

Published in 1969, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was one of the first memoirs by a Black woman to receive mainstream critical attention and is a landmark of American autobiography.

Discussion questions

  1. After the assault, Maya becomes mute for years — a silence she associates with her voice having caused harm. What is Angelou saying about the relationship between language, power and vulnerability?
  2. Momma Henderson is a complex figure — enormously dignified, but also sometimes protective in ways that accommodate white power. How do you read her as a model for survival?
  3. The book is the first in a series of autobiographies, yet it reads as a complete work. What makes it feel finished at this particular point in Angelou's life?
  4. The title comes from a Paul Laurence Dunbar poem about a caged bird singing. How does this image — singing as both expression and entrapment — operate throughout the narrative?
  5. Angelou writes about racism with specificity — particular incidents, named places — rather than abstraction. What does this specificity achieve that more general language cannot?
