About this book
Daru Shezad, a former banker in 1990s Lahore, loses his job, becomes addicted to heroin, falls in love with his best friend's wife and descends into a spiral of crime and self-destruction. Hamid's debut is a stylish, fractured narrative set against the backdrop of Pakistan's nuclear tests and the society of privilege and exclusion they exposed.
Published in 2000, Moth Smoke was Hamid's debut and established him as one of the most important Pakistani novelists writing in English. He set out to write about Lahore in the way that F. Scott Fitzgerald had written about the Jazz Age — as a society consuming itself.
Discussion questions
- Daru is narrated by multiple voices, including himself — each giving a different account of the same events. What is Hamid saying through this fragmented testimony — about guilt, about memory, about who controls the narrative?
- Daru's class position — educated but economically displaced — is central to his decline. How does Hamid show the specific cruelty of being between classes in Pakistani society?
- The nuclear tests in 1998 are the novel's historical backdrop. How does Hamid use this event — as context, as symbol, or as the thing that makes everything else feel meaningless?
- Daru is not sympathetic in any conventional sense. How does Hamid maintain the reader's interest in a character who is making terrible decisions?
- Moth Smoke was a debut published when Hamid was 30. What in it shows the writer he became — and what shows him working things out for the first time?
