About this book

Miss Jean Brodie, an Edinburgh schoolteacher in the 1930s, selects a group of pupils as the 'crème de la crème' and devotes herself to shaping them — educating them in her own aesthetic and political enthusiasms, including her admiration for Mussolini. Spark's acerbic, perfectly crafted novel asks about the ethics of influence, the relationship between charisma and fascism, and who ultimately betrays whom.

Published in 1961, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is widely considered Spark's masterpiece. She described it as 'a warning against fascism.' It is one of the most-assigned texts in Scottish literature courses.
