A radical retelling of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim — rechristened James — who is far more intelligent, self-aware and morally complex than Twain's narrator allows him to be. Everett's Booker Prize-winning novel is a devastating, often darkly funny examination of race, freedom and the authorship of American stories.

Published in 2024, James won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Booker Prize in 2024. Everett has been publishing since the 1980s but James brought him his widest audience. He has described it as a novel he felt he had to write.
