Sixteen compact, stripped-down stories about ordinary Americans in crisis — marriages failing, drinks being poured, the things people cannot say to each other. Carver's most celebrated collection established minimalism as a mode in American short fiction and showed how much could be conveyed through what is left unsaid.

Published in 1981, this collection was edited heavily by Gordon Lish. Carver later restored his original drafts in the collection What We Talk About When We Talk About Love: Beginnings.

Carver's minimalist style — short sentences, sparse description, dialogue that talks around its subject — is inseparable from his content. What does the style say about the emotional world his characters inhabit?
The title story ends with four people sitting in the dark, having drunk a bottle of gin, unable to say anything. What has the conversation revealed — and what has it failed to?
Many of Carver's characters are alcoholics, or live with them. How does alcohol function in these stories — as an escape, a symptom, or a subject in itself?
