The World Fantasy Award for Best Novel
Chosen by a rotating panel of judges at the annual World Fantasy Convention, the World Fantasy Award is unique among genre prizes for its consistently surprising, non-populist choices. Winners 2000–2025 (selected years).
Unlike the Hugo or Locus awards, the World Fantasy Award is not voted on by fans or readers — it is decided by a small panel of judges (typically five authors and critics) who change each year. This produces a list that consistently rewards literary quality and originality over commercial success.
Notable for championing less-mainstream voices: Nnedi Okorafor (2011), G. Willow Wilson (2013), and Lavie Tidhar (2012) all won for novels that might not have prevailed in reader polls. Ursula K. Le Guin, Tim Powers and Gene Wolfe are among the most decorated multiple winners.

Common questions
What is the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel?
One of the three most prestigious speculative fiction awards, alongside the Hugo and Nebula. Unlike both of those, it is decided entirely by a panel of judges — not reader votes — making it notable for rewarding literary ambition over popularity.
How is the World Fantasy Award winner chosen?
A panel of five judges, who change each year, selects nominees and votes on the winner. The convention's attendees can also nominate, but the final selection is the judges' alone.
