A young Black farmer in a fictional suburb of Los Angeles is taken to the Supreme Court for reinstating slavery and segregation in his town — and somehow his actions have made his community happier. Beatty's Booker Prize-winning novel is a savage, absurdist satire of race in America that doesn't spare anyone: not the oppressors, not the activists, not the Supreme Court, not the narrator himself.

Published in 2015, The Sellout won the Booker Prize in 2016 — the first time an American author won the prize under revised eligibility rules. It had been turned down by numerous American publishers before being published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
