Sashi, a sixteen-year-old in Jaffna in 1981, dreams of becoming a doctor — and watches her brothers, one by one, drawn into the Tamil militant movement as Sri Lanka descends into civil war. Ganeshananthan's novel is about the impossible choices available to women in a community torn apart by violence from every direction — the state, the militants, and the war itself.

Published in 2023, Brotherless Night won the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2024 and the inaugural-era Carol Shields Prize for Fiction, the largest English-language literary prize for women and non-binary authors. Ganeshananthan is Sri Lankan American and spent nearly two decades researching and writing the novel, including interviews with women who lived through the civil war.
